Week 7

This week was big time. For the first time, Sawyer slept for 5 straight hours. Unfortunately, he didn't make a habit out of it. The next day, he started another growth spurt and wanted to eat all day and all night.

He also discovered a magical new world in the form of an activity gym. The first time we put him down on it, he accidentally hit a rattle that was hanging over him. He liked the sound it made, so he spent the next hour or so trying to hit it again. He was able to do it several times. It was pretty incredible to witness him learning something new.

Another huge development came during tummy time. He rolled all the way over onto his back, all by himself. It took him a while, and he worked really hard on it. We were so tempted to help him out. But we didn't have to. He's a determined little guy.

Week 6 Video

Week 6

This has been a really great week for Sawyer. He continues to smile more and more. He wakes up with a huge smile now. He seems to be a really happy baby. We will follow up to this post with a smiling video that's really special.

Grandma and Grandpa Cannon visited this week. Emily met a few new moms in our neighborhood and started attending a New Mom's Support Group in Oakland. Chris went back to work on Wednesday. Sawyer missed him so much he went to visit him today. He also stopped by Em's work and Aunt Kelly's work. He loved all of the attention!

Some pictures from Week 6 are below.

Week 5 Update

This week has been a great week. Sawyer has been smiling for about two weeks but yesterday he smiled in response to us for the first time. Today we've gotten a handful of smiles out of him. He has also started napping in his crib (as opposed to his co-sleeper in our bedroom). Basically he gets cooler every day.

We also had his first photo shoot. The pics are below.

Week 4 Video

Week 4

We can't believe Sawyer is 4 weeks old!

His 4th week was an eventful one! It has been very hot in the Bay Area. Kelly, Jonathon and Natalie came over and we ate outside. It was so hot Sawyer spent a few days only wearing a diaper.

We also took Sawyer to the "Baby Brigade" in El Cerrito. The El Cerrito Speakeasy is a dinner theatre that accomodates to babies under 1 year old in on Tuesdays. The theatre is packed with babies and parents. Halfway through the movie we looked around and saw several dads standing along the outside pacing with their babies in one hand and their beers in the other. Sawyer slept through "I Love You Man." Next week it's "Observe and Report."

On Thursday we had a reunion of our prenatal group. It was really neat to see all the babies and hear everyone’s birth stories. We took a really cute picture of all of the babies.

Here are a few pictures from the week and a video of Sawyer trying to get his binky back into his mouth and sneezing instead. Enjoy!

Week 2

This week, Sawyer met Grandma and Grandpa Colchin. According to Grandma, the pictures don't do justice to his cuteness.

Week 1

Tonight, Sawyer is a week old. It's been relatively uneventful in adult terms. But for someone who was thrown into the world 7 days ago, a lot has happened. He moved into a new house, met a dog, went for a ride in a car, had a bath and experienced a tiny earthquake.

Gidget Sleepwagging

This isn't really baby related, unless Gidget happens to be dreaming about playing with her new housemate.

Our First Baby Video

We took this video last night.  It seems like he's either trying to make more room for himself for an extended stay or trying to claw his way out.

When do you think the baby will arrive? Vote!

We added a poll to our blog so that people can vote on when they think the baby will arrive! We thought this might add a little bit of fun to the suspense. Please vote and we'll vote too! If you get this email from us with each new post you'll need to go to http://littlecannon.blogspot.com/ and the poll is on the right hand side.

Gettin Closer

We took the first picture (to the left two/above) weeks ago and the picture (to the right/below) this morning. It might be hard to tell unless you look at Em's belly every day but the baby has moved way down. Hang in there a bit longer little guy!

Baby's room is all set up

He likes animals, although he may not realize it just yet.  And you can't tell from this pic, but he also has a nice view of an orange tree in the backyard.

Thanks mostly to Grandma Colchin we have quite a book collection going for Little Cannon. He even got Valentine's Day Books this year. Check out the pic of his books below!

Week 33 Check-Up

We had a checkup and tour of St. Luke’s Hospital today. The appointment went well. We learned that the big bump on the right side of my belly near my rib is the baby’s butt! I have been having contractions and the midwife said that maybe I’m the type that is going to have contractions until I actually deliver. In any case we’re going to look into getting more rest and taking things easy.

The tour was great. The labor rooms are huge and they look really comfy! They have huge windows too for lots of sunlight. The post-partum rooms are also really comfy and have beds that can pull out for partners. Some even have double beds and the midwife said she often sees moms and dads sleeping in them together. We met a few nurses. We also met the lady that will help us with the baby’s birth certificate and social security card. I’m really happy we chose to birth there.

There's an upside to all this rib kicking

Last night in our birthing class we learned about optimal fetal positioning. It's the best position for your baby to be in when you go into labor:  head down, with his back towards the front of mom's abdomen.  If he's in this position, labor is nearly always much shorter and easier.  There are ways to tell if your baby is in this position, one of which is being judo kicked in the ribs.  Although uncomfortable, it's nice to know that baby cannon is currently in the optimal fetal position.  And if he ends up rolling over (baby's only turn clockwise), we learned some really good tricks to get him back over.

Homework

We have homework this weekend. We start our Childbirth Preperation Class at Natural Resources this week. It's a 6 week class every Tuesday night. Our doula is actually one of the instructors. We got an email this week reminding us to pick up our materials and letting us know that we had to have the readings done before our first class! It's been a while since we had a homework assignment! They also said to wear comfortable clothes, like we were going to yoga. This should be interesting!!!

In other baby news we've moved to have some room for the little guy. We moved to El Cerrito, a very family friendly neighborhood. We're still close to BART but now we have a room for the baby and a yard for the dog! We've been working hard on getting the nursery set up so we'll have pictures of that soon. He's a lucky little guy... his room is really, really cute.

Finally, in baby news/updates we had a prenatal appointment last week and things continue to look good!
